[Steve appears less than ten minutes later looking like a deer caught in headlights. He's still covered in a fine sheen of sweat, dressed in the clothes he'd left work work in that morning. Some of the panic does seem to ease out of him once he sees Leonard lounging there.
It hadn't been intentional. He'd been doing something at the art shop and had sat back in a chair to think about a piece he was working on. He'd fallen asleep. He'd had a nightmare.
He lets out a small sight of relief and just sort of slumps a little. Not visibly, more...metaphysically. His being seems to sort of curl in on itself as if the relief were a physical tether of some sort.]
Hey. [It's a little weak but it's a word. At least he thinks it is.]
[He's on his feet the second he gets a good look at Steve. Shaken and only slightly wild eyed which means a nightmare. Leonard collects his mug and moves to tug Steve towards the couch.]
[He rests a pillow in his lap and prods Steve into laying down on it.] I'll read it to you.
[The pages are flipped back to the beginning of the book and he starts to read, one hand in Steve's hair. The Hobbit is a good and easy read at night.]
[Steve lays down and tries to relax. He listens to Len reading and enjoys the hand in his hair and is just so glad he gets to have this again without questions. He's glad Len was up...he didn't think the other would have appreciated him trying to get into his bedroom to make sure he was alright.]
[They need to talk about nightmares, but that's a discussion to have during the day. For now he keeps stroking his hair and reading, pausing only for a sip or to turn the page.
[It takes almost half a dozen chapters for Steve to finally succumb to sleep. His breathing is soft and easy content with the warmth of Leonard near him]
[When he drifts off, Leonard tugs a blanket from the bank of the couch to cover Steve as best as he can. He finishes his tea before asking Gideon to lower the lights so he can drift a little too.
[Steve sleeps soundly on the couch with Len there beside him. He wakes as Len rises and rolls over slowly to watch as his love stretches and tries to work out the kinks from remaining in the same position all night. He's so handsome. So kind. So wonderful.
Steve waits until he leaves before he extricates himself from the couch and heads to shower before joining him in the galley for food.]
Thank you. [He says it with a smile hoping it conveys a whole lot more than thanks for food.]
[Leonard prides himself on keeping in the best physical condition possible, but sleeping on the couch like that will always leave him with kinks that haunt him the rest of the day.
He lets Steve continue to drowse on the couch before going in search of breakfast. All of Steve's favorites and plenty of them, he knows just how much he can put away in a sitting.
It's.. nice. Having him on the ship again. They both slept without nightmares and that's another encouraging sign.
A glance up as a freshly showered Steve joins him. He pushes a coffee mug at him, just filled and doctored the way he likes it.] Of course.
[He knows, Steve. And as he passes by to fetch the fruit, he rests a hand lightly on his arm, giving it a squeeze.]
[Steve takes the coffee and sips it while passing by for a piece of fruit when a hand lands on his arm. His eyes travel up the arm to Len's face and he gives the other a smile full of love and warmth.]
I love you. And good morning. Because I didn't say that first either.
