I am uncertain how much you consider Edward a friend, but he has told me on more than one occasion that he has spoken with you at some length. I was wondering if you might be willing to play a special role at the Yule Ball this year in regards to a surprise I have planned for him. You are, of course, free to decline.
You may call me Oswald, yes. I'm glad to hear that. You see, at the Yule Ball... tomorrow night... I plan on asking Edward to marry me. Immediately. My family stands on certain traditions and it would be remiss not to ask someone to give Edward away. My own mother will be there to do the same for me, assuming I can get her here on short notice, but as Ed has no other family here, I was wondering if you would not mind playing that same role for him? I am not trying to imply that you are like a mother to him, but he has expressed some dislike for discussing his own family and in particular avoids his father. So a female figure committing the act seems a better choice than a male.
I understand if you feel that it's not appropriate for your relationship with him and will not be angry at you. I simply wished to make the effort before deciding it would have to be scrapped altogether.
Thank you. I will have a corsage of Lilacs and Bells of Ireland set aside for you upon your arrival. Should Ed inquire about them, please tell him you're not sure and do not spoil that you are there for our wedding. He does not yet know I'll be asking him and I don't want the surprise to get out before I ask.

Normally this would not be my thing at all, but I would be honored to do this for Ed.
