You got paired with someone I don't like. Eve is fabulous. She helped me regain my abilities and added a couple new ones when I needed them most.

But Quentin Beck is a mouthbreather.

Well I know he doesn't like people speaking ill of Twilight Zone, for some reason.

[ and just. So many thoughts and comments and objections in general. ]

Why the hell'd I get paired with him to begin with? It's speed dating.

[ Deep breath. Obviously not what she's talking about. ]

So why's he a mouthbreather?

He's arrogant. Like Papa and all the others at the lab.

[ Which feels like it should be enough, but if she doesn't tell him what happened, he won't understand what else she has to tell him. She needs a moment, though, to get the wording right. ]

He creates things. Really neat devices that, if they worked, they'd be amazing. He wanted to show us what his machines did, he said they'd make us see all our hopes and dreams as if they were very real and very much so right there.

But something went wrong. I spent five minutes in a panic because I thought I was in the Upside Down. I saw people in cocoons. You. Joyce. Mike. People I care about here.

Somehow...in his head, it was our fault they didn't work. People had been messing with him, he says, interrupting his work. But...if he were so great...he would have made sure his stuff worked before demonstrating. He didn't. I don't like him. I dislike very few, but he's on that list.

[ He's silent while she speaks, listening to the whole of her point. As she speaks he grows angrier and angrier. ]

Sounds like the type. So why's he still here?

Breathe, dad.

[ She knows what that silence means. ]

He was punished. Put on probation and community service. He’s learning. I just don’t like people who screw up and can’t see it’s their fault.

[ He snorts at that, making his opinion on the matter abundantly clear. ]

You guys don't have jails here?

We do, but it wasn't an active attempt to hurt people. If it were, I don't think he'd have made it to jail. New Dodge doesn't like to be fucked with. Sorry. Excuse the swearing.

He just needs a giant stack of books on how to apologize. And probably a trip to the Upside Down. Which I can make happen, along with controlling the monsters inside.

That's how Eve helped me, by the way. I also thought I was surrounded by Demo-creatures. And she gave me control over them, and a boost to my other abilities. When I couldn't control the fake demo-creatures, I knew I was safe.

Okay. Lot to unpack there, kid.

What do you mean, New Dodge doesn't like to be messed with?

The townspeople stand up for each other. Something bad comes along, something happens that affects all of us. We all work together to set it right.

Okay. So small town. That makes sense.

What's this? Sudden music being sent to Hopper's TC? The sounds of Harry Feynman singing some song? Yes, that's exactly what it is.

"What the HELL, Feynman??"

[No real answer, but more music.]

Look at that. My brother is the wrong god damn age.

[ She wanted her 'twin' okay. The two idiot twins of the Byers house, getting into trouble. Sneaking out of school to buy Hopper that Jim Croce biography for Christmas that one year. And that rare vinyl she just happened to find at a yard sale.

The one she'd stay up late with helping to plot campaigns for D&D games she never participated in.

yeah, I noticed that too. hey, could be worse?

Maybe. It just feels like a tease.

Nancy was here a while ago, but she remembered Mike and I being younger, so that was really weird. Maybe it'll just be like that and I need time to adapt?

Probably. It'll be an adjustment for everybody, I'm sure he'll be just as confused about it.
