[ It doesn't take long for Evie to find out where Jack was staying. Just some light snooping and a bit of stalking. You know; the usual shady VK behavior when they want information or to get something done. Evie had given herself a mission. A small thing she felt she had to do because the way he'd looked when he left her store sat wrong with her for so many reasons. Namely, it showed her that she was wrong and Jack wasn't an Isle boy at all. He was something better. Something good. And something told her he knew what Isle life was like without having been there.
So, watching him a bit gave her a vague idea of some kind of routine and eventually, Evie found a space of time wide enough to leave him a gift.
A messenger bag that she'd sewn herself in blue and black (with a very faint Bad Apple Logo sewn into the shoulder strap), built not only for durability, but it looked fucking awesome and had pockets and space for things like the 100 count tin box of colored charcoal pencils and a leather bound sketchbook that rested neatly inside. And there's a note in her handwriting. Just a small, scrap of paper with the words ”I’m sorry I upset you. Let's do something sometime that isn't full of depressing talk about horrible places. ~E.” And being the quick and sneaky thing she is, Evie is long gone before Jack gets home. ]
Closing the shop early. My last appointment cancelled because they want to see the dinosaurs, and that doesn't sound like a remotely bad idea. Do you want to grab dinner at the saloon and go see the dinosaurs, too? I also owe you that five-cent tour, don't I?
Hey, Jack. Interesting news for you; You'll be training with a couple of the other guys in the truck for the next two weeks. The blue guy with the elf ears and the grey guy who teleports everywhere.
My son is finally here, and I just got married, so I'm going to need a couple weeks to adapt.
Don't worry, they're good at what they do, and will make training super easy. Enjoy!
[ Before Peter can even speak, Clever Girl lets out a small dino bark and a hiss and this is quickly followed by barking from Anne's dog. There's a scuttling sound as Clever Girl runs to Peter, Clever Girl promptly being picked up with Peter heard going "You have got to stop trying to sleep on Hulks bed. You have your own." before he addresses the voicemail he's trying to leave a message on. ]
Sorry about that. Hi, Jack. It's Peter. I just wanted to call to see how you're settling in and now the new voice codes are working for you. Gimme a call back, okay?
[ Another barking sound from Clever Girl and a soft rumble that Peter hopes is some manner of happy sound from the microraptor; ]
[Okay, this? This he understands a lot faster than the rest, because he's got telephones back home, so returning the call isn't a problem.]
Hey, pally! Jack here--I'm doin' great, thanks fer askin'. Got me a swell job woikin' fer dis lady dat sells food outta a damn automobile, if you can believe dat noise. Got me a nice place ta sleep, too.
[The tiniest hesitation.]
Also, uh...well, talkin' 'bout goils ain't stuff fer da telephone, yanno? But hey, youse ever wanna come by where I woik, I can treat ya to some fine dinin' and such. Call me back--talk to ya later.
...oh, and by da way? Yer dog 'n cat sound sick. Might wanna lookit dat.
on behalf of my guardian who is amazing and never wrong:
Go buy a single natural gold rose. Just one. They're not expensive at all and are an organic gold flower. Like. Actual gold it grew that way.
Go to the noodle stall in the merchant some. You're not getting noodles. You're getting the mushroom dumplings. They're evies favorite ask for extra honey jasmine sauce. And be at her place of work before four with all of this. Ask her out then.
[ if she sounds a little down while trying to sound fine? There’s a reason for it. ]
Jack, I have news. It’s not great news for us, but it is great news for the entire town. We found a cure for the current illness going around. And I’m hopeful you don’t have it, but if you do, get yourself to the clinic right away.
The less than great news? I’m going to be staying at the SHIELD house for a few days until it’s finished. When this is all over, I’m stealing you for a week.
[Cue the sound of a long, very relieved--if shaky sounding--breath being let out on Jack's end.]
Sounds like a plan. The whole kit 'n kaboodle. I'm just...gonna haul my carcass to the clinic double quick. And dat's fine, you stayin' the hell away from me 'till dis clears up. Y'know, just in case I ain't got dis funny bug 'n I really did get sick again.
[A beat.]
Dey thought I had cholera when I was real little. Didn't, 'cause I didn't die...but I'd radduh a pretty goil didn't see me like dis. It, uh--it ain't fer polite company.
[ Evie is quiet, an intense feeling of fear in her chest. Not Jack, too. New Dodge needs to leave her boyfriends alone, even if it wasn’t responsible for Sam. So she’s silent for a moment before huffing a small laugh out. ]
Oh, like you could stop me from seeing you if I weren’t already trying to cure you and the whole town. I’d be there in a second and you know it, Blue-eyes.
Heh. Cute, you thinkin' I'd let ya see me pourin' out all over myself. Dat's real sophisticated 'n attractive in a fella. No tanks.
[A beat.]
You ain't gotta worry 'bout me, Eve. I'm too tough ta kill, 'n I hoid a thing or tree 'bout dis. Shouldn't kill me now if it didn't then--you go do what you do. Save da town wit' dat big brain you got. I'll be in da clinic, waitin' ta get saved, alright? You just tell me if youse got anything I can help wit' from a sickbed.
You have no choice. You seem to forget I’m the daughter of a villain and a princess to boot. I will find a way.
[ all joking aside?
...no she’s totally the type to ignore his wishes and come see him anyway. They’re both probably aware of this. ]
Mal says Peter is in there somewhere. Try to get a room with him. He’s sick with...how did she explain it? Okay, so you know how his abilities are all spider-like? He was bitten by a genetically modified spider and it rewrote his genetic structure. It hurt like hell and made him very sick for a day or so. Guess what this virus is making him relive?
[Lots of mumbled, barely coherent cursing. Yep, Pete's getting popped for getting sick, the moron.]
You bet yer ass I'll be roomin' wit' dat nincompoop. Honestly, you let a guy outta yer sight for two seconds and he goes 'n gets his genetical whatsits all tied up in knots or somethin'...
[ If Jack was ever wondering what Evie looked like not done up in all her make up and fancy clothes, now was the day to see it. He gets the same picture Mal does, but with different messages. ]
look! There’s a girl under all that make up! And she doesn’t look half bad, either.
I’m teasing. I promise I’m not that stuck up anymore. I’m just waiting for parts of the cure to finish doing what I need them to do before I do a test run to see if we finally got it.
holy mackrel. You should leave off the goop more often. I knew you was pretty, but you look like somethin out of a fairy tale. or a real life angel. yeah, that's it.
You know if there's a way to develop pictures from this contraption? i wanna frame that one.
So once this second cure works, and I'm certain it will because the women I work with are brilliant, and once you're feeling up to it, I have a surprise for you.
[ It’s nothing exciting. Or maybe it is and that’s why Evie is doing it. But jack is going to get several pictures of somewhere not at all on their planet. Seriously. Loads of pictures. And that’s it. That’s all she sent. She knows he’s at work somewhere and it’ll probably be a while before he answers. So she’ll wait. His reaction should be amazing. ]
Real life mexico. Actual, honest to God, real life Mexico.
And you happen to be dating a girl who is fluent in Spanish. And French, but that's not relevant at this time.
You also happen to be dating a girl who doesn't like camping, or sleeping outside, but she's currently making a tent to make both of those things a lot more comfortable for her boyfriend.
If I woke you up, I really am sorry. I can't sleep. I met a version of my mother from another universe and it's so strange. She's lovely and kind and trying really hard to step away from evil and give it up for good. I've told you about my mother, so I'm sure you can understand why I find this so amazing.
[ And mildly upsetting. If Regina can do it, why can't Lady Grimhilde. ]
Her name is Regina Mills. She introduced herself earlier. In case you wanted to meet her, too.
[ It's nothing exciting, really. Just a present wrapped in wrapping paper of his favorite colors and a note in Evie's handwriting that says 'For Las Pozas. Love, Evie.' ]

Charlie's truck? I've been. She gives a free meal to newcomers. I didn't meet her, it was one of her employees, but the food was awesome.

I'll ask her and get back to you. I already know, but maybe it'll distract her for a moment.
